As part of SBCA’s structure, success, and strategy, the Board of Directors plays a pivotal role within our association. SBCA Board Members are recognized leaders of the structural building components industry and have the rewarding opportunity to shape key initiatives, advocate for the interests of SBCA members, make a difference, and contribute to the growth, success, and betterment of the association and the broader construction industry.
“I’m honored to be a board member for this great association! The unity developed for the betterment of the entire industry is nothing short of impressive,” says Greg Griggs, SBCA Board Member and Senior VP – Manufacturing-East at Builders FirstSource. “The overall camaraderie amongst all board members is invaluable. I’ve always said that one of the most impressive things about the association and being a board member is that on any given day, we are market competitors, but when we come together as a board for the Structural Building Components Association, we check the competitiveness at the door and focus on overall industry issues and aligning on what is in the best interest of the industry and association.”
With the privilege of serving on the SBCA Board of Directors, board members are responsible for the insight, oversight, and foresight of the SBCA, its staff, and the association’s initiatives. They meet regularly at each Open Quarterly Meeting (OQM) and BCMC to discuss updates, current projects, and make impactful decisions leading to association progress. Virtual monthly financial review meetings and an end-of-year meeting are also held for consistent oversight of the association’s work.
"It's hard to place a value on the ability to influence an entire industry,” says Chris Tatge, SBCA Board Member and President/Owner of Dynamic Construction. “The takeaways have certainly been worth the time commitment. From new friendships and networking, insights into trends, and learning different means and methods, I have put my business at an advantage over my competitors."
The Board is comprised of Executive Officers, At-Large Executive Committee Representatives, Component Manufacturer Representatives, Associate Representatives, and NFC Representatives. CM Board Member seats are typically 3-year terms (flexible within SBCA’s bylaws); Associate Representative terms are 1-year commitments, and recently NFC Representative seats were increased to up to 3-year terms. The Executive Officer positions are the President, President-elect/Treasurer, Secretary, and Past-President; each of these positions are held for two-year terms, with a total commitment of eight years as an SBCA Executive Board Officer. Each member of the SBCA Board of Directors brings a unique set of skills, experience, and background to create a well-rounded leadership team.
“With 30 years of participation in SBCA, including service on the board and multiple committees, I have gained invaluable industry knowledge and built lasting professional and personal relationships,” says Jerry Vulgaris, SBCA Board Member and VP of Sales at A-1 Industries. “The collaboration and shared expertise within SBCA have reinforced my commitment to the advancement of the truss industry. Reflecting on this experience, it is clear that the benefits and insights gained far exceed the contributions made.”
One of the primary functions of SBCA and its leadership is to advocate for the use of structural building components as a systemized solution in addition to the broad adoption of manufacturing trusses and wall panels across the industry.
“Being a part of SBCA’s Board of Directors has provided me with immeasurable additional opportunities to network and engage with the industry’s best and brightest,” says Rachel Hoops, SBCA Board Member and Senior Manager at LMC. “It’s a delightful feeling to be in a room with a group of individuals that come together with the sole intention of advancing and advocating for this industry. I am grateful to be a part of this group and help contribute to an industry I believe will continue to grow and strengthen within the building material and construction community.”
Serving on the SBCA Board of Directors provides the opportunity for members to give back and represent their fellow component manufacturers, suppliers, framers, and members alike, all in an effort to better members’ businesses and operations and the overall structural framing industry and construction industry.
“The SBCA board includes many industry leaders who I have found to be extremely generous with their time and routinely offer guidance and perspective that I use daily,” says Ken Kucera, SBCA Board Member and VP of Installed Sales and Manufacturing at 84 Lumber Company. “Since becoming involved with the SBCA, especially serving on the board, I have developed relationships that allow me to better appreciate how special this industry is; SBCA and its board have some of the best people you will ever meet.”
